The Witch And Governor Phips - 12
William Phips, born the 21st
child of James and Mary Phips in 1651, ran away to Boston when he was a
teenager. Famous Lynn witch Molly Pitcher told him that, "some day you
will find a treasure, become a rich and powerful man, but be tormented by
the likes of me..." At age 40, he discovered the remains of a sunken
Spanish ship in the West Indies, recovering 26 pounds of gold and 66,000
pounds of silver. Giving most of his treasure to the King of England,
Phips was knighted and appointed Governor of Massachusetts. It was Sir
William who stopped the witch-hunting frenzy in May, 1693, when the girls
accused his wife of being a witch. |
