Torture in the Dungeon - 15
One of the ways of forcing a confession was to tie a person's feet to his
neck until blood dripped from his eyes and nose. The pillary was another
method, and forcing prisoners to stand for hours with their arms
outstretched, was Judge Hathorne's favorite. When one accused old woman
begged the judge to have her husband support her after standing with her
arms stretched for four hours, Hathorne replied, "She had strength enough
to torment these girls; she should have strength enough to stand." |
