Recommended Books on Wicca/Witchcraft

Hi Starwitch,

My name is Angela and I was just wondering if you could give me a website or a name of a book or anything that will help me better understand Wicca and witchcraft? I am very interested in it and I would actually like to become a witch. If you could e-mail me back I would be so grateful. Thank you.

Angela
Hi Angela,

Thanks for visiting my site. There are a ton of websites (and books) available if you want to learn about witchcraft and Wicca.

This page has reviews on several popular witchcraft/Wicca books. You can purchase the books from there as well if you'd like:
Witchcraft Books

Most Wiccans tend to recommend Scott Cunningham books. I really enjoyed his books on natural witchcraft: Earth Power and Earth, Air, Fire, & Water. They have great ideas for practicing witchcraft on a low budget using items you can find in nature.

I haven't read Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner or Living Wicca yet, but they are highly recommended by most witches I've known.

Glancing through my copy of Living Wicca just now, I realized why so many kids have come to me asking me to "teach" them about Wicca. Apparently, Scott Cunningham has a whole section dedicated to finding a teacher. Hmm.

Well, just remember that I can't be your teacher, and if you ask me to teach you I'll merely tell you to read the books and websites that are available. I don't trust people very much and it's hard for me to believe that someone would offer to mentor a new witch if they didn't have a hidden ulterior motive. Remember too, that as smart and witchy as Scott C. was, he was also nerdy-looking and would've almost certainly had trouble getting laid if he weren't a famous Wicca author. Offering to teach people Wicca would have been a really easy way for him to get a piece of ass that he otherwise wouldn't have got. Hey, I'm just sayin'. You don't hear Silver Ravenwolf telling you to find a teacher, do you? It's because she's not a desperate & horny man (or a lonely, friendless woman.)

Just be sure that you understand that if someone is offering to teach you for free, they do have a conscious or unconscious hidden motive for doing so. People are self-serving, so you should look for the ulterior motive if a stranger or website is being too generous to you. Most times the motive will be money or sex. And with witches, the motive is often attention. Young witches sometimes pretend to have super-witchy-powers in order to impress you. Just remember that they are sad, lonely rejects in real life. You'd make up lies too if you were them.

We've set up a Witchcraft 101 on the EUTM Message Board so that new witches aren't left with just dirty old men (pretending to be harmless and confused teenage girls) who are chomping at the bit to get the chance to "teach you" a few things. Not everyone gets involved with spirituality because they are spiritual people. Some view Wicca and New Age belief systems, and even Christianity, as a place where they can find gullible, needy people that they can take advantage of. Please be careful who you associate with, and as one of the banned members of the forum once said, "Don't be so open-minded that you let your brains fall out." Thanks for the tip, banned member!

Bright Blessings,
Starwitch
