One series that I have found to be entertaining is The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It follows the adventures and misadventures of Chicago's resident wizard/ private detective, Harry Dresden. While the series is fictional, some elements of it do come relatively close to accuracy. It's a much more adult series than Harry Potter, so it wouldn't be a good read for kids.
Butcher also wrote the Codex Alert series, which has elements of magic and deities in it. Nothing approaching what I know and practice, but a well written and entertaining series.

Re: The Dresden Files
I LOVE the Dresden Files. It's actually what got me interested in the Golden Dawn traditions and the like.
My favorite kind of author is one who is continually improving, and Jim Butcher definitely does.

Re: The Dresden Files
He does. I really wish he would do a prequel to both Codex Alert and The Dresden Files.
