Advice on a friend

Post by ForestNight »

I have been observing a friend of mine.

At first he was my best friend and he was normal when i met him.

a year passed by and he disappeared for a bit. then he came back (this being 2 years ago)

he wasn't the same friend i had before.

recently (6 months ago maybe)

he started speaking about things...how he was put on this earth to vanquish evil spirits...how he has an organization to do so...he practisies Alchemy and he is a wiccan.

however he's acting very strange.

very distant...

the more he talks about it the more i don't believe what he's saying..the more far fetched it becomes.

he also recently has become obsessed with Dante's inferno..he says it's nothing big

however i am getting worried about him..

his head isn't clear

I just want to know if there's anything wrong with him...
should I believe what he's saying?

help?!?

There are a bunch of different explanations. Was your friend under great stress before he disappeared? I'm not a counselor or psychiatrist but schizophrenia comes to mind and he might have been in a mental institution during the time he was gone. Second, drugs could be an explanation. Have you noticed anything about him that suggests that he might be taking something (injection marks, dilated pupils, eating a lot of sweets). The obsession about Dante's inferno sounds strange to me and suggests that he is on a christian trip, not wiccan. Dante's inferno is essentially about describing hell from what I remember about it. This could fall together with his mentioning that he has to destroy evil and could fall together with schizophrenia. Just my 0.02c.

okay, as soon as you hit alchemy I gave up. I'm somehow doubting he is a serious alchemist. Your friend seems to have come down with a bad case of the Batshit Crazies.

Well, it depends really. Does he want it just because its a bad-ass movie replica? Or does he want to attempt using it as an actuall grimoire via Chaos Magic? And if the latter, can he even read latin?

not sure on the Latin thing...i should ask..

P.s. should i ask him to go out with him next time he wants to go out and 'vanquish evil?' or should i leave him be?

Should you? Well thats up to you. I suppose its the best way to tell if he really is batshit or not though. If you do, could you report back here? Because I'm sure it would be an interesting experience whether hes truthful or not.

Ooh, I want that book too now. It's ok guys,I read Latin.Interesting item for it's own sake.I think you should talk with your friends parents if you can, voice your concern, believe me: a 'batshit' occultist muttering incants [Latin or English] and 'casting out evil' here in Glasgow, would soon be a hospital/mortuary statistic, don't go out with him,it could be dangerous. How old is he?He has mental health issues, I am pretty sure of that.

I don't know. I think everyone should have the right to be as utterly
crazy as they want to be. Yes, I realise that this stance comes with
consequences, like someone hurting themselves or others; however,
perfectly 'sane (tm)' people do this every day with similar frequency. I
feel basic human freedom is, in most cases (if not all) worth these risks.

If this person is your friend then I would suggest continuing to be their
friend. If you think your friend is saying crazy things, just be honest and
tell him so. You can also ask your yourself this: "Do I really know what
reality really is and what it's really about?" Sometimes sane really just
means sharing a popular opinion. Your view of reality might be just as
ridiculous as his, but you have the benefit of your peers constantly
re-affirming that your crazy views are appropriate. Think about why
terms like de-'ranged' and 'way out there' are synonymous with 'bat-shit
nutso'? It takes a brave soul to be truly crazy. This type of thinking may
be too philosophical or abstract for most of us to find palatable though.

On the other hand, if your friend is unhappy I can understand you wanting
to change this fact.

If your friend truly has a mental illness (whatever that may be) then I'm
not sure what to say. I think every situation is different, and I'll say
something I think I'll get a lot of flack for, but I'm going to say it anyway.
I've rarely known anyone who started seeing a mental health professional
or psychiatrist for a serious mental or emotional problem who ever really
got better; at least not due to their 'treatment'.

I suspect in some ways that these professions are akin to what 'medical
doctors' were in the days of random amputation and blood letting (I even
have my doubts about modern times). Some of the treatments seem akin
to treating a common cold with steroids, antihistamines, acetaminophen
and bronchial dilators. Sure, the symptoms will be suppressed, but slowly
the cold will destroy the body while it's helpless. Remove these symptom
suppressors and the symptoms will come back with a fury.

I'm not saying I have the answers. Someone once told me, that:
"whatever is wrong with a person, they will usually heal on their own. The
best you can do in the meantime is to allay their fears while they
recover." This same person told me that in any act of healing, one should
strive to do *as little as possible*.

These are just my opinions. There are some diseases, both mental and
physical, which require an intervention in order for healing to take place.
However, if your friend is young, this might just be a 'growing pain'. Best
of luck to you.

As always, my apologies for yet another ranting diatribe.

cheers,

T. Guy

Someone with Schizotypal disorder can be a danger to themselves and others.'Casting out evil' has,in the past,in well documented cases, translated into murder.A friend of mine went into 'meltdown' and told me God wanted him to seek out and kill paedophiles,he truly believed it was his 'mission'.He is stable now,but it was really scary at the time,he thought another friend was harbouring paedophilic desires,as the voice of God told him so,thankfully he didn't act on that...but he did have a kitchen knife under his bed and he was amassing 'spiritual' weapons. It had to be large knives - to cut out the badness.Urghhhh. This person's behaviour worries me.Speak to the parents if you can, please.Be careful.

I'm thinking it sounds like a Scizophrenis also (trust me, my mom has it, and there is a history of mental illness in my family) I think talking to his parents is a good idea. Anyways, keep safe. and I hope everthing goes well for you.

"Replica of the "Book of the Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows" as in the movie "The Ninth Gate." Includes all nine engravings, chapter pages, and latin text."

I kinda would have thought that a satanic book of shadows would be more expensive. This looks kinda cheap to me.
