Merry meet! I hav been reading about ritual tools and i was wondering whether you definately need an athame? I wanted to ask becaue i dont feel comfortable using knifes.

I don't use them :) I just find my way around them when I have to i dont like knives either.

I think it is optional, just like a wand.
Some spells call for an Athame I have found, but those spells always say it is okay to use a kitchen/butterknife. (For like cutting a garlic toe, or something.)

I use an athame (mine is a pocket knife) but I just recently started using it. They are optional :)
