what grows well in the desert?

I haven't been in Nevada that long so I really don't know. All I see are trees and bushes that the groundskeepers take care of. I miss flowers! LOL

Indoor plants should be the same most places, I would think, but for outdoors I have no idea what to do in this climate.

Speaking of indoor plants, I get to buy some next week. :D My bf's mom's fake plants are starting to depress me.

Hi ...I'm sorry I missed this post...This is a good question, I imagine it gets pretty cold in the winter and REAL hot in the summer. Generally speaking your local nursery will only sell plants that do well in that climate, (they don't want returns) unless you have a green house, you might be stuck with cactus type plants. Creosote does well in the desert and ephedra, but this may need a particular type of desert soil. I wish you luck in your gardening adventure, let us know what you found to plant smileydance Blessings, Firebird

Aloe Vera is a good one just try to plant it under something for shade.

I had quite the green thumb when living in Calif. mountains,
I get down here in the Victor Valley area of Ca. I had the
hardest time getting anything to grow ! It's been 10yrs we've
been down here and I have aloe vera(my Mom's) still growing
and peppermint for my tea at night. Other than that I am
at a loss to get anything to grow.
I wish you all the luck in the world to get something to grow.
Let us know tho, if you get stuff to grow !

I live in Mesa, and while I struggle with the planting calendar still(SO different from Northern CA!), I have found that lots of flowers and veggies can be grown, if you plant them at the right time, cover them when it gets hot, and make sure to mulch(SUPER important to keep the soil moist and cool!).

So far I have successfully grown peas, nasturtiums, green onions, tomatoes, daikon, butter lettuce, and aloe. This year I'm also working on carrots, shallots, pumpkins, and beans.

@ fireraven, when my grandparents were still alive, they lived in Mesa. My grandpa grew the biggest and the best tasting tomatoes I have ever encountered, and he had the most fabulous saguaro growing in the middle of the rock lawn!
I wish you all the best in your desert gardening :D

Nice ! :D
We have a saguaro in our yard as well! It's finally starting to grow an arm.
My tomatoes are thriving! I can't wait until they produce fruit! I am growing a Cherokee Purple and a Brandywine this year.
