I can't seem to find a black candle anywhere

Post by valerian moon »

The corner store has them, but I would feel bad since those are catholic candles, and I'm not using it for catholic things. I mean, protection is good right? I just feel like that would be disrespectful to the catholics to buy a candle that they use and then use it for other purposes.
There's a new age shop but they're expensive and I can't go there often.....

I've bought some before from my local craft shop. Usually, though, I order mine online and have them mailed to me. If push comes to shove, perhaps you could make them?

Money's money, I really don't think they'll care what you use them for as long as you pay for them. And as you say they're for protection- not something bad. And anyway, the Christians have appropriated so much from Pagan religions so I figure what goes around come around ;) Also check out your local dollar shop or as Heartsong suggested, you can shop online. Personally, I love http://www.etsy.com

There are candle making guides on the internet. A simple google search pulls up quite a few. There are also kits available for purchase (I got one for Yule and it was very easy to use) both at craft stores and online. They may not turn out perfect, but I think they may be more effective since you're channeling your creative energy into them. :)

Melt some wax crayons with the wax for a candle and you can color your candles. Printer toner also works perfectly.

Go to the dollar store. Get a white candle in a holder of some kind. Get crayons. Get an empty can you have had something to eat out of and clean it. Put the candle in a pot of water and warm it on the stove. Work it out of the container. Put the candle in the can and put back in the pan. Turn the heat up to melt the candle. Get the wick out as soon as you can. Add black crayon. Once it's all melted put the wick in the container, add wax slowly, in layers letting it cool every so often. If you don't there will be air holes and your candle will not burn nice.

Here is a highly useful video on how to make candles from scratch. The dollar store and Wal-Mart carries them for low prices too. I get mine at Wal-Mart and online but on a variety of sites. Hope you enjoy the video!

I buy those candles a lot, then peel off the label, no harm no foul....but wait...the store has black candles for Catholics?

Well, maybe it's just me but I don't find it disrespectful to use Catholic candles. Just like what FF said, just peel off the label. :D

Actually I'm planning to use their leftover "hosts" in my healing spells. :D Right Kassandra?

I know this answer is unhelpful in the middle of April, but black candles are more plentiful in the months leading up to Halloween. Depending on how greedy your local stores are, this time can start up to two months before the actual holiday. If you seen sparklers next to the Easter bunny, you know commercialism is working it's magick. halfsm Start looking around the end of August or whenever Chucky, Freddy and Michael rear their ugly heads. Whenever you find black candles or other tools that are hard to find, you may want to stockpile them.
I got a set of 8 black tea lights at Walmart for only a dollar or two last Halloween.

When I buy candles I try to buy them online. It's more peaceful for me to shop for things at home surrounded by positive energy, but that's just how I do it. I get most of my candles from ebay, In fact I just bought a bundle of seven black candles. I don't see anything wrong with using catholic candles. A candle is just a candle. It's what you use it for that matters. Like if you were short a candle and used a birthday candle... a little silly but nothing wrong with it. And yes, I have done that. lol

Edit: In fact, birthday candles used to be my go-to item when I was younger and "not allowed" to practice my Magick.

Birthday candles do come in black and are sold as cake decorations for an "over the hill" theme. Party supply stores are more likely to sell these kind than the average grocery store.

Are you sure the corner store is only Catholic? Can't think of any use for anything but white candles in catholic church. Is it possible the store is a botanica in which they make use of saints and stuff. In that case, black candles would be part of the standard stock, and supplies for Santeria and Houdon could be found there. They are religions that have many magical practices. In my town there is a botanica in the same block as the Cathedral, and it does mixed business.
