Being a Wiccan without being a witch or casting spells?

Post by lavenderweave »

I have a...odd question for you all. A girl I knew from school years ago activated her facebook after a hiatus. Her profile said Wiccan and I was like sweet and went on with life. Well I was being a creeper a couple days ago and went through it again and this was under the religion thing with Wiccan. No, I don't cast spells, practice magic, and I'm not a witch. I'm just a little confused on that explaination. I'm still very new to this, so explantions of what you guys think would be awesome. I'd ask her but to be honest she never responds to any messages of us getting our kids together for plays dates, so I'm not going to bother.

Wow I forgot the question.  I'm not sure what my facebook friend means by being a Wiccan but she doesn't use magic, cast spells, or is a witch. Just a little confused by that. Thanks in advance!

So, there are some Wiccans who don't consider themselves to be witches. Now there's debate about how this fits into a lot of the traditional teachings of Wicca, but it's enough to say that these days there are Wiccans who focus more on the religious aspects, don't go with the traditional "label" of witch, who do religious rituals but not spells, that sort of thing. Sounds that's like how she sees herself.

I practiced Wicca for about three years before I moved into the magical aspect of it. I have a friend who practices magick but doesn't consider herself religious. Whatever floats your boat :)

Yes, one can honor the god and goddess of Wicca, and practice the ceremonies to honor them, without the magical part of it. In most religions this is how it is done where religion and magick are separate things.
I am the Earth, The Sun and the Stars
And I am the also the Moon
I am all animal and birds,
And I am the outcast as well, and the thief
I am the low person of dreadful deeds,
And the great person of excellent deeds
I am Female. I am Male and I am Neuter.

I do not know what your friend means by being Wiccan either. It would be nice to know if she has read any of the works of Gerald Gardner or Vivianne Crowley.
