Scrying with a Mirror - Help?

For a long time, there's been a black scrying mirror (I think it's obsidian, but not sure) in the back of my mom's closet, but as far as I know it's never been used. I suddenly remembered it yesternight and now I'm curious to maybe get to know it... but I'm not really sure where to start. I've worked with tarot before, but never anything like a scrying ball or a mirror. I know I should cleanse and consecrate it first, and I have a ritual to do that, so assuming that's out of the way, where should I go from there? Thanks.

You might want to ask your Mom why it was in the back of the closet. it could be it was put there for a reason.
When it comes down to the nature crystals and stones, you do know more than I do. Still, I have found obsidian to be very variable, even within the same variety. On the other hand, it might be fickle, or even downright nasty to one person, and may absolutely adore you!

Ed, thanks for that $0.02; I'll have to ask her to use it anyway since it technically is hers. I think she just lost interest in scrying fairly quickly for some reason.
