Good website for identifying?

Post by blue_moon »

I was really excited when I got my package of tumbled stones. I picked the bigger ones so I could use them for healing and energizing.

As I opened it I was a bit disappointed. .. main reason because I hardly know a stone (and I thought I did know so many! )

Anyone know a good website?

Ok. I sorted them and took some pictures.

This is red jasper - nice deep rich colour
Image

Amethyst - no doubt
Image

Tree Agate - I've never seen these. Found them by chance before I wrote this thread. (I love clear stones, but I like stones having solids, clear parts and sparkles even more)
Image

These are light green and they seem to sparkle a bit.
Image

Citrine?
Image

A beautiful vivid gray
Image

The left one is grayish like the ones above and the right one pinkish... idea?

A light brown

A nice pink colour - and a carnelian?
Image

These are black - onyx? Obsidian? How can I tell the difference?

Image

The one upper one looks like a rosequarz - and the bottom two are clear

The greenish ones I think may be nephrite. I've seen similar color nephrite as well as dark green.
Can't really help you with the other ones, but why don't you try google searching the pics? Google will come up with similar results and you may identify them. Just a suggestion, can't be sure if it'll work though.

Greetings Blue-moon!
Please keep in mind this is an Identification without being able to see the stones "in person".
Light green- Either Indian moss agate or aventurine. The sparklies you mentioned leads me more to the latter.
Citrine?- lookes to have a fair amount of red tint in the photos. I'd lean more towards a light carnelian.
Gray- Looks like a jasper to me.
Pink- Pretty sure it's rose quartz.
Black- Obsidian.
The one in the picture with the brown and grey jasper- By the nature of the banding, I would say a piece of agatized petrified wood, but definitely an agate.
My best guess on the last six stones would be one very light rose quartz, four quartz, and one agate (the one with the white band on top).
Please keep in mind this is without actually examining them in person.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for taking a look ed!

the stones look a lot like the photographs! But still they look different.

I'll keep searching.

I've never seen a rose quarz like that - I only know them "clear" a big shine through - these pink stones are solid - no light shines through.

I've seen the "shine through" type and the more opaque types too. There's a lot of pink agates and jaspers out there too.
Also, if it is the more opaque variety of rose quartz, check it for stars! a lot of that type will have stars (asterism) just like star sapphires will, but not as strong. Shine a small flashlight on one of the rounded ends to look for a star.

The ones you tentatively identified as citrine look more like pale carnelians to me.

Post 1 Pic 7: Bottom center looks like it could be agate, or maybe tiger's eye, although that would be an unusual color.

Post 2 Pic 2: Far right is definitely a pink agate. Idk the other two.

Post 2 Pic 3: Could also be jet. I don't think they're obsidian; obsidians usually have less texture to them. (Look at the edges of the shine)

Post 2 Pic 4: Middle one could be an agate. (Lost of those, haha.) Far right looks like snow quartz. Far left could be milky quartz.

I could be wrong about most of these, of course XD Hope I'm helpful.

Crazy.... I just went to look for a med. I wanted to take I found the bag of stones I baught and I actually forgot about these !
I took em out of the box I had them in and into my pocket - my leg felt hot right away. As if I had a hot pack in my pocket - not warm, HOT!

Now I remembered why I must have forgotten about them. I started with picking out those stones looking more or less alike.

An agate - I'd say. The red and white looks beautiful.

And more agates (?)

This one looks a bit like a pigeons egg / a bit redish/cupper and blue grayisch purple - with white spots

Image

Image
Image

This one reminds me a bit of rainbow obsidian - at first glance it looked black or really dark brown but it has grayisch red light brownish stripes (?) I tried to capture it better with the help of a flashlight.

Image

This is grayish blue and glittery look like it has moss in it.

Image

Image

The one is solid green - the other green see-through with moss

Image

This is the same one

And what do you think this could be?

Hey silversong thank you for you input!

P1/p7 is no tiger eye, agate is more likely.

The black stones - the shine you see is from my lamps.
I really have no idea how to tell the difference. To me these stomes just look black.

edit

Look at this stone http://www.edelsteine.de/shop/popup_ima ... 86&imgID=0
Its a rainbow obsidian - and it looks alot like my brown tree looking like stone. What do you say?
Hm.. mine are partly see-through, and seem to glitter a bit. - this could mean they are agates - if I get that right.
But these two stones are very colourful! Light brown, pink, yellowish and brownish stripes - the clearer parts remind me of rose quartz.

And the one white one with the brown and gray stripes. Could it be a picasso jasper?

The black ones.. I looked up jet and read they are light weighted? Well these aren't so I guess it can't be jet. But... I looked at them with my lamp - they glitter like crazy! And seem to have dark brown/redisch and dark gray stripes. But since the reflect the light you really have to use alot to see all this.Z

The yellowish/orange ones from the fist set of pictures all seem to have stars! They sparkle like crazy - so I guess they might be aventurine as well!??
