Re: The direction of the elements
I want to stop by and point out that some practitioners hold the cardinal positions to be completely fixed and true, while others find they're more malleable.
As an example, for my personally, I like I'm the north east of the U.S. and in correlation to that, I tend to associate the north with air, the east with water, the south with fire, and west with earth. That's just based on my own personal beliefs and geography though.
But I just wanted to point out that it doesn't have to be set in stone. Whatever you feel resonates within yourself and your own beliefs should be what is true for you.

I just wanted to make sure you knew that not everything is set in stone. Blessed be.
Re: The direction of the elements
I worked in two different tratitions when I was first training with the one I eventually became ordained in.
Boy was it confusing when I was asked to call a quarter, I'd stand there and think ok in this group what goes where?
The quarters and their energies will always match the compass directions, but the elements like Fae said are malleable.
I have now come to a realization that each of the elements could exsist in any of the quarters. This does seem to have some bearing on where one is geographically located.
Sometimes we have called the elements to the center, while facing the center, that has been working well. We also call Spirit/Ether element from the center.

Re: The direction of the elements
Agreed with FF -- the elements can really belong in any direction. In my coven, we use the traditional elemental directions (East/Air, South/Fire, West/Water, North/Fire). However, I am also a strong advocate for developing cardinal associations associated with your geographic location. For instance, if you live on the East Coast, you could consider having the East represent water, because of the Atlantic Ocean.
