Black dogs in hauntings

I heard about black dog myths all throughout stories of haunted houses in America. So, I looked it up recently and these myths are old. Scholars debate if it originated from Celtic or Germanic lore, the myths are found all over. Dogs seem associated with hell or the underworld/death. (Even in Aztec myths too.) Of course there is the underworld godess Hekate who has them and Odin as well.

What got me was these stories of black dogs are found all over America from people who have no knowledge of the history.

The link doesn't work

Sounds interesting Lilith! It's not only the Norse who have the hounds of hell. The Greek have them as well (Romans as well most likely)

I used to see a black dog in a cemetery that I would drive past on my way home from night shift. It always paced me, from just inside the fence.

Sent it of to fast. Works when Googling!

We have a myth about a black dog here as well. He lived in the castle on the hill and used to deliver messages through a tunnel to the other castle (like 15km or so appart). He died in the tunnel as an old dog and it's said you still hear him bark at night.
