More on Nature vs Nurture

Post by Firebird »

Just read a really interesting article. The DNA of your mother, grandmother and her mother (and on an on) effects the way you view the world.
If it is true that epigenetic changes to genes active in certain regions of the brain underlie our emotional and intellectual intelligence — our tendency to be calm or fearful, our ability to learn or to forget — then the question arises: Why can’t we just take a drug to rinse away the unwanted methyl groups like a bar of epigenetic Irish Spring?

Kool stuff.

Did you know that our mitochondrial DNA is purely from our mothers? (Whereas our 'genetic' DNA is a combination of father and mother)

Now why did my mind immediately seize this as the basis for the primordial Sacred Mother? Spit spat and Bob's your uncle. I duuno where that came from.

I read just a few of the comments following the article, and one said the point was you can change your own genetic makeup (vs changing just your off spring's genes) by changing your environment.

Love this article. Interesting stuff. Puts a lot of things into perspective.
