Stop Nail Biting spell

Post by CleverlyDisguised »

So I haven't been on here much lately... having some problems, but one thing I was wondering was if anyone has a spell for ending bad habits (specifically nail biting in my case).. it's getting pretty bad. I have tried the nasty tasting nail polish and it didn't work...

I admit I'm a nail biter too. It's a nervous reflex I suppose and have been doing it all my life. Has yours been long term also Cleverly? The only thing that stops me for a short while is to start filing them so there are no ragged edges I'm tempted to rip off, then use some groovy polish. Repeat the manicure in a couple days. And again etc... I think keeping them filed helps me the most. Before long they have grown an 1/8 to a1/4 inch before one snags or chips then >rip! < it's all over till I'm motivated to try again

Amputation is probably a more drastic solution than what you're looking for. I don't really have ant suggestions, as I'm not a nail biter. Were I, my upper extremities probably would have been nibbled off up to the elbows by now.

I was a nail bitter in my childhood and now do it sometimes when I'm stressed. I replaced this habbit with biting my lips. I think I preferred having a bad manichure than a bleeding lip everytime I get out of a stressful situation. Hehe.

When I was a little bit younger, I asked my mom to sew gloves on my sweaters and pj's. I guess it somehow worked :-D

Firebird, I have been doing it for years, roughly 20 now, and it is pretty bad now where I keep going until it can be painful to use my fingers on occasion

Bychan, I sometimes chew my lip as well, usually when my fingers hurt

I know of two methods, neither of which require wasting energy through magic.

First, find the root of your anxiety or nervousness. Nail-biting is a byproduct. After you've identified the root, you can decide on the best way to convince yourself that the particular anxiety or nervousness is silly and unnecessary :)

Second approach, spray some Bitter Apple on your fingers ;)

Not trying to be insulting with that second one.. haha, i just remember my mom using it on my little brother. He used to chew his fingers till they bled. The spray worked wonders. Though it may have been a different brand or composition, but basically the same principle.

I really shouldn't post after a bad day at work. I get too graphic. It's because I have to be professional with people that make me want to scream

Just got some new emery boards, I like them better than most metal files.
Then as was sanding my almost bloody stubs down, I began the chat this ditty in my mind:
"With these nails I am filing,
Keep them far from my smiling"
eh, ...it ain't the best, but trying to retrain the brain.
Thanks for the topic, it got me the file them  I've been especially stressed so the nails have been suffering, and there's nothing worse than biting and realizing it's going to rip into flesh, ouch.

So how's the resistance to nail biting going? I don't recall ever being a nail biter. My oldest granddaughter used to bite her toenails. Fortunately, she outgrew that. It does say something for her flexibility, that she was able to do that.

Not bad actually... Haven't bitten them off in over a week.. Only problem now is that I am so unused to having nails that when I scratch an itch I sometimes leave bloody scratches
