night blooming cereus

Post by Firebird »

Hi folks ! This is a pic of my night blooming cereus. I think it is pretty special because it frequently blooms on a full moon, it missed this month only by a few days, it had a couple other blooms last night, but tonight is a real show, there must be about 9 blooms that measure way more than the avarage persons fully open hand, and the fragrance is intoxicating, it's right under my bedroom window, so I'm hoping for some special dreams tonight, and a slightly narcotic sleep!
Sorry my device doesn't have a flash, ...illumination provided by flashlight!

Wish there was smellavision, the fragrance reminds me of the beach and sweet flowers there.
The thing I forgot to mention is each flower only blooms ONCE, then it's done. It starts to open at dusk, has it's mating dance with a moth and by morning it is flaccid.
I think it really knocked me out, because I didn't wake up till morning, that's not typical for me.
The only part of dreaming I remember is meandering through an unknown house.

I think I'm going to like this plant in it's new location (had to move it because the tree it used to be under had to have some major limbs cut, so it was getting to much sun after that).

Here it is this morning...
What it lacks in graceful foliage, it makes up for in a fabulous fragrant floral moon presentation!

Those are so beautiful! I am moving to a new home and I am so excited to start gardening. Are these hard to keep alive?

They are a succulent, very easy to keep alive and super easy to start a new plant, just stick a leaf in the dirt, and presto! :surprisedwitch:

Apparently it blooms when it pleases I've had it Bloom on different occasions but it seems It's usually close to some special occasion like a moon or a holiday it would be nice if it only bloomed on the moon LOL. It seems to bloom 3 or 4 times a year give or take ...3 is about average.

I've been reading about this plant. Once met a native man at a powwow who is telling me about the umbilical cord that runs through the length of the flower and the spiritual connection that it had, it was really fascinating to speak to him and I wish I could have remembered everything he said. It definitely has hermaphrodite qualities. It starts looking in a phallic way  changing overnight into this receptive kind of chalice quality, and the inner parts are very much looking like the end of a fallopian tube, then in the morning it's spent. I was looking at how it's used in making the Ayahuasca drink, did not know this, and it definitely helps with sleep, that night it bloomed I had it in the house and watched it slowly open into a great blossom, it was fabulous, later I took it to the nightstand and slept with the fragrance intoxicating me all night. I've , been under some stress and completely forgot to pay attention to any dreaming. Did sleep well though !!
I'll keep y'all posted when it blooms.
Here it is in fast motion...

Before I forget I wanted to mention this plant had about only 7 buds on it recently. It bloomed the day before the Solstice the day of the Summer Solstice and the day after. Magical darn plant. :fairy:
