A mulatto like me

Post by PinkTurtle »

I am mulatto...
Not white
Not Black
1 history of being slave owners
1 history of being slaves
I live in a world where my maternal great-great grandfather could have owned my great-great grandmother
My existence is both hypocritical and ironic
The very idea of creating someone like me was once illegal
I pass for something I am not
Like an immigrant, I must carry around a passport
To verify who I am,
To verify that I belong
Not to just a majority
But to a minority
In school, teachers play favourites and only teach half
Half my history
Half my past
Half my culture
Half my music
Half my art
Half my heritage
Half my life
The other half isn't worthy enough to be taught
Half my people look at me and accept me
Then get to know me and reject me
Half my people look at me and reject me
Then get to know me and accept me
My heritage is a sign of blind love
And a catalyst for hate
My heritage tears families apart
Yet is the ultimate sign of unity
If it was 1827, I could be sold as labour to the highest bidder
If it was 1827, I could be that highest bidder
Half of me is subject to discrimination
Half of me does the discriminating
That is the way it is and the way it will be
For this is the life for a mulatto like me...
