I teach folk magic

Post by Fjäll1291 »

I have studied Swedish folk magic for two years, and the four years before that, I was into wicca-ish things.
Now, I would like to teach other people about my path, about folk magic and witchcraft in a mix.
I have so much easy-written information to share, is anyone interested? :D

Swedish folk magic and modern witchcraft

Introduction

Swedish folk magic (I'll call it SFM) is the magic that was practiced by the wise people in Sweden in the 1700-1800s. Folk magic usually means that the power resides within the tools and words in the spell, not within the practitioner and the universe.

Do not mix SFM up with norse mythology that was practiced during the viking age (800-1100s).

SFM is not a christian practice, but some christianity is incorporated because Sweden was christian at that time.

Gods and goddesses are usually not a part of SFM, except for sometimes the christian god, but that doesn't have to limit you! Of course you can incorporate other gods into your practice. Just exchange the christian god for one of your gods.

Who could become wise?

There were certain things that would make you wise. Being born between 12-1 in the night was a good sign. Especially if you were born on a Thursday or Sunday, because "Sunday child will see a lot".
Being born on Christmas eve was a special thing, because on that eve, all the evil things were out, so then the child would've gotten the power of the invisible things.
If you were born with teeth you would have a secret knowledge. Being born with six toes, club foot or humpback would also be a good sign.
You could also get your powers from the invisible world.

The tools and the altar:

Place your altar facing north, because north is towards the mysteries. You always need a book to write down your experiences. The book is like a book of shadows, but its called "Svartkonstbok". That means black arts book, but it doesn't have to contain black magic. The name was made by the christians, who thought the wise used black magic.
A wand can be good to have, it is used in many spells.
A knife is just like the wand used in many spells, but can not be touched by anyone else.
For scrying you would need a reflective object.
Other things that are good to have are bones, graveyard dirt and herbs.

Spells - Keys to success

If you read the spell wrong, the magic will strike back on you.
Waning moon is the best for magic.
Thursdays are the second best time for magic. The best days are certain holidays, for example midsummers eve. It takes three Thursdays to be as powerful as a holiday.
Magic works the best between sun going down and up, preferably at midnight.

Place should be the right too, "crossways", water running North, cemetery, a house been moved three times, fireplace, doorway.
Most magical number is 3, second is 7 and 9.
Rituals were done with left hand and counter-clockwise, and you walk to the left and backwards.
You have to be completely silent in the ritual and not look around.
The rituals work the best if you're naked.

So if you're going to do a ritual, be naked, start with casting the circle counter-clockwise, backwards. Be silent during the entire ritual, except for when speaking the magical words. Repeat the sentences 3, 7 or 9 times.
Make sure the time and place is right, and you will succeed.
